Professional Indemnity Insurance by Colin Dawson

Speaker's Biography:

Colin Dawson has been in the marine insurance industry for 30 years, starting his career at Lloyd’s. Moving to Hong Kong in 1994 he started specialising with yacht insurance in 1997, building divisions at two international insurance brokers before establishing The George Group in 2009.

Soon after he began a partnership with Expat Services, arranging insurance covers for yachts and the related industry. In 2011 Expat Marine was established and soon became recognised as one of the leading specialist yacht insurance brokers in the region. In 2021 the business portfolio of Expat Marine Ltd was bought by Howden and the partnership The George Group had with Expat Marine Ltd continues with Howden

Colin started sailing when he arrived in Hong Kong and has been a member of the RHKC since 1999 and shortly thereafter he joined RORC. He is a member of the Imperial Poona Yacht Club, demonstrating that life does not always need to be taken too seriously. A regular offshore sailor and participant in the regions regattas for larger yachts heh as been involved with racing and cruising yachts as well as motor yachts of all sizes. For 18 years he sat on the organising committee of the San Fernando Race until the race ceased in 2017. He has been involved with safety discussions as well as risk management decisions in all manner of scenarios involving the yachting world.

Colin takes keen interest in the yacht industry itself, being the Founder and Chairman (until stepping down in 2016) of the Asia Pacific Superyacht Association. He is a Director of the San Fernando Race Foundation, a Hong Kong charity that operates a home for disadvantaged children in the northern Philippine town of San Fernando. He is also a Founder and Chairman of The Elephant Foundation which focus on education in Hong Kong about protecting elephants, rhinos and their habitats as well as working with communities and rangers through Africa aiming at conserving habitat and the people / animals that share it.
